Switzerland shows strong resistance against powerhouse China

Switzerland struggled with China's powerful play at times

Montreux, Switzerland, May 29, 2014 - On the third day of
the 29th edition of the Montreux Volley Masters, China overcame a solid Swiss
team in three sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-13). Best scorer of the match was China’s
Thu Zing with 14 points. Sarah Van Rooij contributed 11 kills for the host.

Despite the fact
that the Swiss girls were playing well and trying to avoid making mistakes,
Lang Ping’s team didn’t let their rivals time to rest and won the first set 25-16.

However, the Swiss
team bounced back after a reorganisation of the players and made the second set
very tight. They put pressure on their opponents by scoring spectacular points.
Switzerland led 8-6 at the first technical timeout. The Chinese fired back and
showed their power by creating an almost unbreakable block. The Asian team
closed the second set 25-22 even if the Swiss talents were trailing just few
points behind them.

In the last set,
the Chinese came on the court even stronger and showed their power at the net.
The difference was seen mainly in attacking with 15 points for China and only seven
for Switzerland. The hosts couldn’t find an answer to the powerful Chinese play
and lost the third and last set 25-13.

The best Swiss
scorer of the game (12 points), Sarah Van Rooij, expressed her thoughts in an
interview. “The Chinese team was very strong and playing with an impressive
offense game. We were playing well in the second set and were leading but
unluckily couldn’t make it to the end!” She also gave us her impression about
her first match in the national team. “That was great! There is a good team
spirit. We always try to help each other. Our next match is against Russia. We
are going to observe the way they play in the aim of beating them on Friday. We
will do our best for it!”
